Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary
Bharatpur one of the finest bird sanctuaries in the world inundated
with more than 400 species of birds. Rest of the day free for self exploring,
sanctuary’s beautiful flora and fauna or exploring the extensive
grounds by bicycle or cycle rickshaw.
Bharatpur hosts a variety of bird species from across the globe. Close
to 380 species of birds are found in this 29 sq km stretch, approximately
10 sq km of which comprises of marshes and bogs. Rest of the area comprises
of scrublands, grasslands and more than 44,000 trees that are used for
nesting by birds each year. This rather intriguing blend of marshes, woodland
and flora found here represents and, at the same time, substantiates the
density and diversity of the region's forest cover.
Today, the Park supports a population of 375 species of birds along with
many mammals and reptiles. The most notable winter visitors to the Park
are the rare Siberian Cranes, whose numbers have dwindled to only two
over the years. The animal variety includes: Golden Jackal, Striped Hyena,
Fishing Cat, Jungle Cat, Nilgai, Sambhar, Blackbuck and Wild Boar among
others. The wide variety of birds includes Common Demoiselle, Siberian
Crane, Coot Snipes, Spanish Sparrow, Red Crested Porhard, Rosy Pelican
and Flamingo, among others.
